Racism in today’s society

Discrimination on the basis of race or ethnicity is as old as humanity, we discriminate in virtually every area of daily life; we choose what we think is good, we discard what we think is bad or useless. Sometimes some people end up applying this thought in their relationships with other people, we prefer some, rather than all, simply because of prejudice, without reason, without solid foundation.

Today, it has to do with culture and education. In 2016, the National Secretariat for the Development of Afro- Panamanians (SENADAP) will be established, with the fundamental objective of including public policies to close the gaps in this area, which currently exists in the country and in the world.

“I have longed for the ideal of a free and democratic society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal that I hope to live for and to achieve. But if necessary, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die” (Nelson Mandela). Mandela’s story is not only admirable for his achievements, but also for his perseverance and courage against the racist policies that were imposed on South Africa. This quote from Nelson Mandela brings to mind several authors who fought and gave their whole life against discrimination, among these characters I can mention Martin Luther King Jr. with his speech “I have a Dream”, Anne Frank, who was a Jewish girl who lived in hiding with her family during the Second World War trying to escape Nazi persecution, since there was discrimination against the Jewish people, we can read her story in “The Diary of Anne Frank”.

Pope Francis, has stressed the urgency of acting according to Christian values to build a better world. We are in a time when there is more and more interaction between people of different cultures, origins, beliefs, I believe that every human being should be respected as such, regardless of their color and origin. We must promote and defend human rights and help to combat racism and discrimination throughout the territory and to move it from border to border.

To move towards a world where racism does not exist is not an easy task, we are going to require the support of everyone, until human rights are fully complied with, it is a long-term commitment. We must respect each other, we must love each other as it is written in the sacred scriptures: “Love one another”, in this way we will be fulfilling the word of God.

Together we can do it, we have to make people aware, from children to the most adult, we have to stop and say NO to racism. We will be promoting human rights, helping to enrich the dignity and value of people. I believe that every person has the right to be better, that is why I say: NO TO RACISM!
